December 16, 1987 (Wed.) The 13th Presidential Election
As a result of the 9th constitutional amendment in October 1987, the direct presidential election system was restored. It was natural that great attention was paid to the issue of a single candidate for the 13th presidential on December 16, 1987 between two representative leaders of democratic movement-President of the Democratic Unionist Party Kim, Young-sam and Co-chairman of the Peace Democratic Party, Kim, Dae-joong. But the opposition parties failed to reach an agreement and, finally, four candidates jumped onto the competition: Noh, Tae-woo from the ruling party, President of the Democratic Republican Party in addition to the two opposition leaders above. The 13th presidential election still revealed non-democratic aspects such as regional conflicts, violence, plutocracy and violations of electoral laws, despite a high public interest owing to the revival of the direct presidential election system. Noh, Tae-woo was elected, winning 36.6% of votes, figure relatively low because of the severe regionalism.
