Tuesday, December 12, 1978 The 10th National Assembly Elections
In the 10th Election of the National Assembly members held on December 12, 1978, the medium constituency system in which two members were elected per local constituency was maintained and the number of local constituencies increased to 154. The Yoo-jung Association, whereby members were indirectly elected (77 persons) persisted and accordingly, the number of National Assemblymen elected in the 10th election was 231.
In the local constituency election, the Democratic Republican Party nominated 77 candidates, targeting one winner per constituency instead of a multiple nomination. The New People’s Party nominated 81 including multiple nominees in four constituencies, while the Democratic Unionist Party nominated 63 candidates. There were also 253 non-partisan candidates.
Former and incumbent influential political figures jumped into the 10th National Assembly race which was filled with non-partisan candidates, recording a competition ratio of 3.06 to 1. No constituency produced a winner without voting. The Democratic Republican Party secured 68 seats, while the New People’s Party 61, the Democratic Unionist Party 3 and non-partisan candidates 22. But due to the medium constituency system under which two winners can be elected in one constituency, the New People’s Party saw 7 less winners than the Democratic Republican Party, although it earned 1.1% more votes than the Democratic Republican Party in terms of total votes.
