April 27, 1971 (Tue.) The 7th Presidential Election
The constitutional amendment bill on legalizing three consecutive terms of presidential service was passed by referendum on October 21, 1969. The 7th presidential election was held on April 27, 1971, and Park, Chung-hee ran for president again. With a call for a shift in generations inside the New People’s Party, the leading opposition party, driven by the slogan: “Time to See Leadership in their 40s” proposed by Kim, Young-sam, three people within the party competed for candidacy: Kim, Young-sam, Kim, Dae-jung and Lee, Chul-seung. Kim, Dae-jung was nominated as the candidate in the end.
For the 7th presidential election, aside from Park, Chung-hee (Democratic Republican Party) and Kim, Dae-jung (New People’s Party), Jin, Bok-gi (Justice Party), Park, Ki-chool (National Party), Lee, Jong-yoon (Free Democratic Party), Sung, Bo-kyung (Populist Party), and Kim, Chul (Socialist Unity Party) also ran for president. Sung, Bo-kyung and Kim, chul, however, resigned from the race in the middle of the election. The main competition was on between Park, Chung-hee, the incumbent president who tried for a third term, and Kim, Dae-jung, who insisted on stopping the incumbent’s third term and replacing the current government.
Park, Chung-hee won the election with the overwhelming support of the people in Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, the southeastern part of Seoul with a turnout. He earned 6,342,828 votes while Kim, Dae-jung took 5,395,900 votes. But it turned out that the vote difference between the two candidates shrank in comparison to that of the 6th election.
