June 8, 1967 (Thu.) The 7th National Assembly Elections
About a month after the 6th presidential election in May, the 7th election of members to the National Assembly was held on June 8. The number of the elected was a total of 175 (131 for the local and 44 for the national constituency), which was the same with that of the 6th election. For the local constituency, 702 ran for the election with a competition rate of 5.4 to 1. A total of 11 parties, including the Democratic Republican Party, New People’s Party, Social Public Party, Populist Party, and Liberal Democratic Party, took part in the election.
As a result, the Democratic Republican Party accounted for the absolute majority, winning 129 seats (102 and 27 each for the local and national constituency), which amounted to 73.7%. The New People’s Party won 45 seats (28 and 17 each for the local and national constituency). While the Republican Party won a landslide victory in rural areas, the New People’s Party saw a big success in urban areas, indicating a division between the pro-ruling countryside and pro-opposition city area.
