May 16, 1951 (Wed.) The 2nd Vice Presidential Election

The National Assembly of the ROK had to undergo a vice presidential election ahead of the termination of the vice presidency since the first Vice President Lee, Si-young resigned from his post in May 1951 during the Korean War. Due to the warring situation on the Korean Peninsula, the National Assembly opened a session in a refugee camp located in Busan on May 16, 1951 to elect the second vice president. In this election, as a result of the first and second rounds of voting, in which no candidate passed the threshold (it requires two-thirds of votes cast by incumbent members), a further round of voting took place. Front runners Kim, Sung-su and Lee, Gab-sung who received the most votes from the second race went to the runoff. In the runoff where 152 assembly members were present, Kim, Sung-su became the second vice president winning 78 votes while Lee, Gab-sung received 73 votes. There was one abstention.
