July 6, 1978 (Thu.) The 9th Presidential Election

As the term of the 8th (6 Years) presidential office was expected to expire, the election of the representatives of the 2nd National Council for Unification was held on May 18 in preparation for the scheduled 9th presidential election in 1978. As a result of the election, 2,583 representatives were elected. The National Council for Unification held the 9th presidential election on July 6, 1978. Park, Chung-hee was elected as president.
Park, Chung-hee was the only candidate for the 9th presidential election the same as for the previous election. The opposition party (New People’s Party) discussed running for the election but decided not to do so considering the difficulty in nominating a candidate by securing endorsement from 200 representatives of the National Council for Unification and the projected result of the indirect election.
In the poll, 2,578 out of the 2,581 representatives of the National Council for Unification participated. As a result of secret voting that was conducted without a discussion, Park was again elected as the president, winning 2,577 votes (1 Invalid). Park was assassinated by Kim, Jae-gyu, Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, in ten months after taking office on October 26, 1979.
