July 20, 1948 (Tue) The 1st Presidential & Vice Presidential Elections

The first presidential and vice presidential elections of the Republic of Korea (ROK) were held by the constituent National Assembly on July 20, 1948 in an indirect election. The term of office was four years and the elected were allowed to serve one more time only. In the election held under the first constitution of the ROK, Rhee, Syng-man was elected in a landslide victory as the first president of the ROK, garnering 180 votes out of 196 members present in the National Assembly as a result of the secret ballot (Kim, Gu 13 votes, Ahn, Jae-hong 2 votes, Seo, Jae-pil 1 undervote). Meanwhile, Lee, Si-young was elected as the first vice president in the second round (First Round: Lee, Si-young 113 votes, Kim, Gu 65 votes, Cho, Man-shik 10 votes, Oh, Se-chang 5 votes, Jang, Taek-sang 3 votes, Seo, Sang-il 1 vote / Second Round: Lee, Si-young 133 votes, Kim, Gu 62 votes, Lee, Gui-su 1 vote, 1 undervote).
